Homeless man guilty in kidnapping hoax

By: The Associated Press

A homeless Ohio man had pleaded guilty to falsely telling police he was kidnapped Clearfield County when he had really just been kicked out of a friend's home.

The Courier-Express reports 24-year-old Matthew Kelce, of Austintown, Ohio, was sentenced to 21 days to one year in jail, fined $1,025 and ordered to have a mental health assessment after pleading guilty to making false police reports in Clearfield County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday.

Lawrence Township police say Kelce came to them early last month to report he'd overpowered two men who had kidnapped and held him captive, then spent several days in the woods living off chipmunks and squirrels he killed.

Police say Kelce eventually confessed that a friend in Brockway kicked him out and he didn't have anywhere else to live.
