School, bank partner to build homes, experience

The Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center is teaming up with a local bank to build new homes in the area.

Students at the school work closely with local suppliers and build what organizers said are $200,000 homes.  Then, Reliance Bank sells the homes for fair market value, putting the revenue back into the school so future students can have the same opportunities.

"If we can get our young people to stay here and are learning the trades, said Reliance Bank CEO Tim Sissler, (they will) be the next generation of people in this community that are going to be the leaders and contributors of the community.  We are all for that because we are about the community.  This is where we want to grow our franchise."

The executive director of the center said students taking the course have been offered jobs on the site from local contractors.
