UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State University’s interim football coach Larry Johnson said Friday he will apply for the fulltime job left open when Bill O'Brien left for the NFL's Houston Texans.

Johnson is a holdover from the Joe Paterno era. He joined the Nittany Lions' staff in 1996 and has been the defensive line coach since 2000.

He also interviewed for the head job two years ago before O'Brien was hired as Paterno's successor.

Dan Gelston of the Associated Press reported other coaches that have been named as possible candidates for the Nittany Lion’s job are Vanderbilt's James Franklin and Miami coach Al Golden, a former Penn State captain under Paterno.

Johnson said he's been in touch with both recruits and current players, trying to keep the team together.

Penn State Athletic Director Dave Joyner said Thursday the search for a new coach would be over in days, not weeks. He said a six-member committee was formed to help fill the position.

Members of the search committee include Joyner, Vice President for Administration Tom Poole, Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator Charmelle Green, Faculty Representative from the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Management Linda Caldwell, men's soccer head coach Bob Warming and Football Letterman's Club Director Wally Richardson.
