Steelers win; miss playoffs with Chargers OT victory

PITTSBURGH, Pa.
After an 0-4 start to the season, Pittsburgh's playoff chances were bleak heading into the final week of the season. But the Steelers rose to the occasion, as Le'Veon Bell rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown, to aide the Steelers in a 20-7 victory over Cleveland.
The Steelers opened the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Jerricho Cotchery to take a 7-0 lead. Bell's five-yard score made it a 14-0 game before a pair of field goals by Shaun Suisham capped Pittsburgh's scoring. A late Browns touchdown made it a 20-7 final, and the Steelers headed to the locker room to wait for scores from around the league.
Pittsburgh needed losses by the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens, both in 1:00 p.m. games, and a loss by the San Diego Chargers in a 4:25 p.m. game. The New York Jets clinched a win, 20-7 over Miami, soon followed by the Cincinnati Bengals defeating the Ravens 34-17.
The game between the Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs played out in surreal fashion. The Chiefs led 24-14 in the fourth quarter before the Chargers rallied to tie the game. A missed field goal by Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop allowed the game to head into overtime, where the Chargers kicked a field goal and held Kansas City off the board to clinch a playoff spot, leaving the Steelers out of the postseason.
This marks the first time during Mike Tomlin's tenure that Pittsburgh has failed to reach the playoffs in consecutive seasons. The Steelers finish the season with an 8-8 record, as they did in 2012.
