Burge's Perfect Game Lifts Lady Lions to 1-0 Win Over Bay Path

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Penn State Altoona freshman pitcher Kate Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) threw a perfect game with 14 strikeouts to lead the Lady Lions softball team to a 1-0 win over Bay Path College on Tuesday morning at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.

Burge's perfect game is the fourth in Penn State Altoona softball history. Her total of 14 strikeouts ties a program single game record.

Lily Glunt (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) led the team at the plate, going 2-for-3. Colleen Meehan (Yardley, PA/Notre Dame) and Cassondra Ross (Port Matilda, PA/Bald Eagle) each finished with one hit for the Lady Lions.

Burge's gem came in the right game for Penn State Altoona, as the squad's bats were quieted by Bay Path starter Keelin Dougherty. In seven innings of work, Dougherty allowed just one unearned run on four hits and three walks.

The Lady Lions' lone run came in the top of the third inning. Ross led off the frame with a base hit through the left side, moved to third on a throwing error, and scored on a double steal to make it 1-0.

Meanwhile, Burge cruised through the Wildcats' lineup. She struck out seven of the first nine batters she faced, punching out 14 of the minimum 21 batters who stepped to the plate against her. The victory marks her first collegiate win.

With the win, Penn State Altoona improves to 4-1 after three days of competition in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Lady Lions return to action on Wednesday, March 12, facing Ursuline College -- a Division II school -- at 9:30 AM and Wesley College at 1:30 PM.
