PIAA Second Round: Bishop Carroll streaks past Monessen; Ridgway falls to North Catholic

Updated: Wednesday, March 12 2014, 12:46 AM EDT

Bishop Carroll's boys basketball team kept their dream season alive Tuesday night, using a 22-0 run in the third and fourth quarters to beat Monessen 69-65 in the Class A state playoffs second round.

Brandon Martinazzi scored 28 points for the Huskies while Nik Suckinos made four 3-pointers off the bench.

The Huskies trailed 51-43 when head coach Cosie Aliquo was given a technical foul. His team responded with its most important stretch of the season, turning their press defense into instant offense.

"My guys never give up," Aliquo said. "They just never give up."

Carroll will face North Catholic in the state quarterfinals on Friday at a site to be determined. The Trojans beat Ridgway 58-43 at Clarion.

Ridgway battled back from an early 27-11 deficit to take a lead in the third quarter. Elkers guard Jeremy Breier scored 17 to lead Ridgway.
