Penn State backup running back, kicker transferring
UNIVERSITY PARK -- Penn State will start signing its 2018 recruiting class later this month. With the departure of two players Tuesday night, the Nittany Lions will now have two scholarships to fill.
Redshirt sophomore running back Andre Robinson and redshirt freshman kicker Alex Barbir have asked for and been granted their release from the program.
"Andre and Alex have asked for and been granted their release. They are no longer with the program. We wish them the very best," the program said in a statement.
Robinson has been used in a backup role the last two seasons, carrying the ball 38 times. The Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt product has scored six career rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns.
With the expectation that Saquon Barkley will enter the NFL Draft, the Nittany Lions will have competition at the running back spot from current sophomore Miles Sanders, freshman Journey Brown and incoming blue chip recruit Ricky Slade.
Barbir has been used sparingly as a backup kickoff specialist.
The departures were first reported by Lions247.
Penn State faces Washington in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 30 in Glendale, Arizona.
