Life Jacket Awareness Day celebrated by local workers
JOHNSTOWN -- Friday was "National Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day" and many employees in our region participated to raise awareness of drowning prevention.
Employees at the Sunnehanna Country Club, Salon Vizions and the Westmont road crew all donned the bright orange life jacket to help raise awareness.
"May 20 is National Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day. Drowning is actually the leading cause of accidental death and the U.S. averages about 3,880 drownings a year. Not wearing your life jacket is the number one main reason why people drown," said Captain Rickey Price of the West Hills Regional Fire Department.
A life jacket "will save you in any water situation. Keeping your head above the water, and help you do all that is needed, especially if you don't know how to swim. You should definitely have it on in the water at all times," Rickey said.
