CHAMPION - The Special Olympics Winter Games will kick off Sunday at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.

More than 350 athletes, 175 coaches and 800 volunteers will travel to the resort, after months of planning and practicing.

"This is the culmination of their year. when they come here they know they are with the best of the best," said Mike Suman.

The statewide competition will feature competition in alpine and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, figure skating and speedskating.

"For some, this is their first time away from mom and dad. It's amazing to see them thrive in their independent world with friends and colleagues," Suman said.

Opening ceremonies begin Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Seven Springs Courtyard.

The games kick off Monday at 9 a.m. with the cross country and snowshoe competitions.

The event wraps up Tuesday afternoon. For a list of events click here.

"When you see their faces, it's so rewarding. My management team has come back for 10-plus years. You get the bug once you start doing it. It's very rewarding," Suman said.
