GRAHAM TOWNSHIP – A man was struck by a vehicle and killed Thursday night in Clearfield County after he stopped his vehicle to move a dead deer off the road, Coroner Mike Morris said.

State police in Clearfield said a 19-year-old girlwoman driving a 2013 Ford Focus is believed to be the hit-and-run driver.

Morris said the deceased man, identified as Boyd Shirey, 77, of Morrisdale, had stopped his vehicle to move the dead deer when he was struck.

Police said the incident took place at 9:40 p.m. in the 3600 block of Deer Creek Road in Graham Township.

Earlier Friday, state police and the forensic unit were at a house on Palestine Road, collecting evidence related to the fatal hit-and-run.

Police examined a silver car sitting in the driveway, which was towed.

Shirey's wife and daughter said Friday that Boyd Shirey was coming home from Philipsburg when the incident occurred.

They said he was a retired veteran and went by the nickname “Junie.”

A friend and nearby neighbor said Boyd Shirey was a great guy.

"I knew him as Junie for years,” Melvin Smeal said. “He was just a friend of mine, and he just lived down the road from me and I seen him drive by all the time, wave or he'd stop and talk."
