Area superintendents dealing with significant amount of snow days

FERNDALE, Pa. -- There seem to be more snow days than school days recently, as the winter weather has walloped counties throughout the area. Now district leaders are tasked with figuring out how to fit the snow make-up days into their schedules.

"This is probably the most difficult winter we have had to deal with school delays, school cancellations, and early dismissals," Ferndale School District Superintendent Carol Kakabar said.

Mother Nature seems to have been granting student wishes for a snow day one too many times this winter, but school officials have plans in place to make up the days missed.

"You use your built-in snow days first," Kakabar said. "Typically the days after that, that are missed, [those] are added to the end of the school year and that bumps back the last day of school and obviously graduation."

Extending the school year is a common theme among school districts. Many students will have to attend school well into June.

"We are at the point now where we need to look at bumping the end of the school year," Clearfield Area School District Superintendent Terry Struble said.

School officials are working with the Pennsylvania Department of Education to make sure they meet their 180 days of school requirement, plus meeting their set number of classroom hour requirements.

"We have Keystone Exams, we have PSSA's [testing] and a lot of other work that we need to help prepare our kids for," Struble said.

School officials are stressing the importance of having snow days to make sure their students are safe as they monitor the forecast, check in with municipal crews about roadway conditions and try to notify parents if school is canceled as soon as possible.

"If the roads aren't suitable to drive on, we don't want our children on the bus," Kakabar said.
